Last month I made an excel sheet of a running balance of my checking account and investing accounts for every single day of the year. I added in paydays and reoccurring bills and reconcile with the balance my bank gives me.
This has worked wonders for me as I'm now able to plan for every single dollar weeks ahead of time rather than doing mental math of "Okay I have $600 and have to pay about $300 in bills and then I get paid about $900 etc".
If you haven't done this yet, I highly recommend it. I never balanced my checkbook, but this is a thousand times better and allows me to plan my savings and investments much more efficiently!
