About two weeks ago I got a mysterious email from "SBI Mutual." This is apparently a legitimate company from India.
The email was addressed to a name that is not my own, and stated they were going to start deducting money from my accounts towards the mutual funds. A few months ago I was a victim of identity theft, so I went into lockdown mode again, changed all my financial passwords, finally put two factor authentication on my pay pal, and contacted my bank to warn them of the spam and to deny any deductions that was not from a US IP address if possible.
A few days later I got a second email saying that the funds would be deducted on March 31st.
No such deductions occurred, of course.
Yesterday I got a final email that had a PDF attachment. The email said it contained all the details of the transaction, and I should open it and review and contact them with any questions I had about the transaction.
I've never seen such an elaborate phishing attempt before. I'm actually pretty damn impressed.
By the third email, Google was correctly marking them as spam, but be aware that the phishers have taken things to the next level these days.
