Hello, everyone.
I’m not sure what to do. My son is ten months old and we just exhausted all of our options through the hospital, so now I know that we actually do owe the full amount from his hospital stay after he was born.
For some background, I had major postpartum depression, and left it to my husband to take care of getting the baby signed up for insurance. He was told the wrong timeframe for getting the baby signed up and didn’t do it until it was too late for our claim to be processed through his insurance. We got a bill for over $11,000 in the mail (which put me into a really bad depression spiral, and I had to take an unpaid leave of absence from work after my maternity leave benefits ran out).
We attempted to submit a form for financial aid within a few days of getting the bill, but they threw out our form because they were apparently still trying to negotiate with insurance.
They finally gave up on trying to submit the claim to insurance about two weeks ago and I was told to submit another financial aid form. I did so within a day and the form was rejected because we “didn’t cooperate with the insurance process.”
I don’t know what to do right now. We used all our saving to live off of when I wasn’t being paid, and at this point, with the budget we have, we’d have to make payments for literally twenty years to pay the bill off.
Mostly, I’m looking for advice about how to proceed so that it doesn’t go to collections. I don’t think I can get the hospital to forgive any of the bill and I can’t pay any significant amount of it in a lump sum, so settling for a lower amount is not possible right now.
Any advice would be helpful. I’ve never been in this kind of financial situation before.
