A bit of background, I applied for self-employment in the UK because I was being contracted for a company that needed a UTR number to pay me, I wasn't planning to apply before this as I was making under the threshold to declare that I was working self employed. So I became self employed about 3-5 months ago (in the current tax year), ive just received a letter saying I needed to pay £100 for not receiving a tax return for last tax year. I just don't understand why I would need to send a tax return for a year in which I wasn't earning money through self-employment, I'm assuming this isn't
a good enough reason to challenge the penalty but I'm just frustrated and cant contact HMRC at the moment. By making no money is costing me £100. Could someone please explain.
