Wife and I have a 10ac block, 10 mins out of town, trees and mountain views. We've had it for several years now and enjoy camping on it. What we would do with it long term has been an ongoing discussion.

We had decided to go with a transportable home builder, off-grid solar, and all that guff. The build cost was going to push up towards 300k once we had all the permits, build, utilities, and shed.

Well we've scrapped that just before paying deposits and stuff. My wife has fully boarded the tiny house train. We live 45mins from the land at the moment and have kids. It was all going to be too expensive, too disruptive with the kids, and too much drama (red tape!!!!!!).

Plan is now to keep using it as a weekender, build a tiny house or buy a shell from a builder not far away, and chip away over the next 10 years. We already have a three-sided shelter hooked up to a tank for shelter and water catchment. Rightly or wrongly, we are going to not bother with permits and live there "temporarily" in "transportable accommodation". Do composting toilet, DC power, gas cooking, etc. Develop a veggie garden, chicken coop, bla bla bla. Plant some more trees to shield our sanctuary from prying eyes.

Tiny house and land will come in at about 100k total. Land is already paid for., and we have cash to pay for the tiny house. Our existing house is worth more than we owe (is that no net debt???). Once the kids grow up we'll either rent this place to cover its own cost with change, or sell it to have the liquid asset. Cost of living for basics will equate to one day of work per week from either mine or my wife's professional jobs. Any extra will be spending money for wants. We don't have many wants, so could choose to work as desired.

Oh... we're in Australia, so medical is covered (mostly). Not sure what other variables are different for here compared to USA or wherever you are.

So... critique our plan. Sounds feasible? What unknown-unknowns haven't we thought of?
