Hey guys, long time lurker of this subreddit. I love the values that this subreddit teaches and I feel like it aligns alot with my life. I am currently a 4th year medical student who will be starting residency next year. Alot of people in this community give the advice of getting out of the corporate "rat race." I can tell you that medical training can also be a rat race. For example, to become a surgeon, many weeks you will work 60-80 hours a medical school, competing amongst your peers, and as a resident 80-100 hours a week. 28 hour call every 3-4 days is the norm. At the end of this rat race you are rewarded $$$$ but you are also rewarded with the skills to do amazing shit. Some of the most amazing things I have seen in my life have come as a result of this sacrifice. One patient had cancer in the bottom of his tongue, spreading into his mandible. During the 18 hour surgery, they sawed off part of his jaw and bottom of the tongue and reconnected it with his fibula in his leg. His leg was literally in his mouth. I have never been so tired at that time but so inspired.
What do you guys think of doctors???? I recently read a post in the personalfinance subreddit and alot of advice was "work your ass off for 10 years and then retire" type of a comments. While alot of people make bank working as doctors, they also do meaningful work. I want to live a simple life like many of you guys describe. I don't live an extravagant lifestyle, but I want to do cool shit in my career like I described above. I was thinking about being an oncologist or cardiologist but that would mean busting my ass off in residency competing in the rat race for the next 6 years of my life. Is a simple life not compatible with being a physician?
