As title states, my 9 year old step daughter's biological father passed away at the beginning of the year. He was uninvolved in her life completely. His family has told us to file for social security death benefit for her. I've never had to deal with anything like this before so i'm looking for a little advice in a direction to go. My idea is to basically set up a higher yield savings account for her and let the money do its work as I already fully support her financially. Honestly, she doesn't even know he existed, i've been her dad her entire life so i'd like to have this set back for when she gets older to give her a head start in life. Any input from you guys will be greatly appreciated.
