I (28F) have finally become overwhelmed by the medical debt that has accumulated throughout my adult life as an American citizen. I had my first heart surgery 12 years ago, but have had multiple expensive emergencies related to it in the time between then and now. My paychecks have been garnished for years and my car was repossessed during the quarantine while I was having my second heart surgery. I'll need another in about ten years when this valve also wears out. Every time I finish a payment there's always more than I can deal with stacked up behind them. I have accepted that medical debt will be something that I have to deal with for the rest of my life, but I would like to attempt to get out of this intense grind.
Until about 4 years ago I thought credit was just a catchy jingle on T.V. so my credit is poor and probably worse now that I have the repo. My current job has good health insurance and pays just enough to keep me afloat with the garnishment, but it is very physically demanding and stressful on my heart. If I quit I fear I wouldn't be able to afford my medicine, but the stress is also affecting my health. Is it time to file for bankruptcy? What are my options? Do I need a lawyer or is there some kind of website? I really don't know where to start.
