I just had an A/C tech out to my property. I was under the impression i would need a new unit because the one I have is about 13 years old, but thankfully that was not the case.I will lay out the scenario. Yesterday, the unit would not run at all. I tried resetting the breaker box and still nothing. Today, before any work was completed the fan began running, but not the compressor. So with the fan running, the tech attempted a new capacitor (which, being pretty ignorant to this stuff, seemed reasonable). Then he said he was not getting a power draw, so he changed a fuse in the furnace. My question is, would the fan run at all if the fuse was blown? Because if so, it is likely that it was just the fuse that needed changed. Also, I have a call in to the company regarding the part price. Found it for about $30 (retail) online, so the capacitor is likely a $15 part for the company. The charged $200 for the part (originally $100, but I looked it up online and showed the guy), plus the $70 service call. All for about 30 minutes of work.If the capacitor was the issue, it seems to me that it should have been about $180 (70 service call, 50 for .5 hours work and I'll be generous and give them 60 for the part). The service call should include up to 1 hour of work, but I'll give them that. I'm also giving them a 400% mark up on the part for convenience and stocking cost. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2GfCloq
