We recently moved in to a condo and have a recurring issue where smells from other units are entering ours. We managed to track down the source by stuffing a sheet up the kitchen vent, and keeping all the doors shut during the day to see where the odors accumulated. The culprit? Our bathroom. The only point of entry I can see is the bathroom fan. My assumption is that the ventilation system is interconnected, but that the outflow isn't strong enough to keep the smells from drifting into our bathroom. The unit is recently renovated and the fan itself is brand new. I'm guessing we need to install some kind of damper, but would that be enough to keep odors out? Is there some kind of filter etc. that would work better? There's nothing we can do about the ductwork itself. The building was built in the 80's, and the strata is not motivated to do any major upgrades.I'm not finding too much online that matches our situation, so turning to the DIY hive mind for help.
