All, I've been working at a small private school as an athletic director (though I was never allowed to be called an athletic director). I built their sports programs from the ground up and did all the duties of an AD. But after years of not being allowed to have the title of the duties I was already doing I found another position. A lateral move to a country club.
I was offered employment at the country club. I accepted that job and went to resign at our school the next day. The head of school met with me, asked me to stay, and asked what he could do to convince me to stay. I told him my grievances. About an hour later he returned to me with the promise of an administrative title and role at the school along with some other small things.
I had zero expectation this would happen and didn't ask for it. Additionally, some of the school employees knew I was leaving, so I knew it would create a bad image if I got promoted to keep me. I told the head of school as much, but he insisted I just go back to those people who knew and be honest about the situation. Which I did.
I turned down the job I had previously accepted at the other location and agreed to the new benefits he had promised me in writing.
Now, about a week and a half later, I was called into the head of school's office. Other staff found out that I'm getting promoted after almost leaving and they are mad about it. So he's revoking the promotion offer because it would "be hard for me to be successful".
I'm really beside myself. What do I do? Do I have any recourse?
Thanks for your time!
