A little background, I am a Finance Manager for a mid size company in Maryland making $83k per year. I was hired at this company 3 years ago for $75k as a Sr Financial Analyst and was promoted about 1.5 years ago. According to local salary survey, my salary should be over $100k. I know to take those surveys with a grain of salt, but the difference between the survey and my current salary is big enough to warrant discussion. Based on similar job postings, the lowest salary I've seen is $90k as a starting.

Today was my annual performance review. My boss gave me a great review and it was wonderful. He asked for my feedback on where I see my spot within company and how I feel about my position. I told him i would like to discuss a more structured plan for my future, and honestly I feel I am underpaid based on the publicly available information i mentioned above.

He was not pleased. He did a legit double take like you see on TV, only it was real. He disagreed with the fact that my market rate is higher than what I am making. He also disagreed that my $8k salary increase over 3 years is low, in fact he thinks that is high. He said requests like these are why companies are tired of hiring young people because they will always want more without earning it. He wanted to know why I was even looking at market rates. This indicates that I am not all in, and I have to decide if I am all in or not. He said if I get a raise, then I'll just want another one.

Then he started talking about the perks I get now, that it was bullshit he let me recently come in late to take my dog to the vet, I should do those things on Saturday. I don't have to work OT. I dont have to come in until 9am. I have to think about what is really important to me.

This was all on the hostile side, I think he thought I was giving him an ultimatum. He kept saying how the grass is always greener but its not worth it, anyone can find a job for more money. I told him I was not personally attacking him, but money is important to me. He asked why money is suddenly so important to me. He eventually said he was going to ask HR if they have any salary data for my position, but says they will not do any market corrections for anyone. It just doesn't happen. But I should think about what's important to me and talk again next week, I guess he thinks I'll change my mind.

I know if the HR data agrees with me, he'll just fall back on the perks and having to earn another promotion which I havent done yet since its only 3 years (he is really anti-millenials). If the data agrees with him, the conversation will be over as far as he's concerned. I never thought a salary discussion would go down like that, it was my worst nightmare. I thought it would be professional, but he took it very personally and I'm afraid he will "punish" me if I ask for anything out of the ordinary (coming in late for a vet appt for example). Not that he threatened anything, but his demeanor was clear. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
