So my significant other and I just broached the marriage topic (YAY!!!!) and we both agreed on a small wedding - I have no idyllic dreams of a fancy schmancy wedding and neither does he - a small courthouse wedding and a dinner at a nice restaurant after with our parents and siblings is a-okay by us - a grand tops. But there is one thing that I care about: my ring.

Before you all go off on your anti-diamond tangent - I know, I know, but it's what I want. But anyway - here's the issue: I out earn him almost 2 to 1 right now and stand out earn him almost 3 to 1 starting next July (I'm getting promoted, yes it's guaranteed) and I don't make much money right now (~$68k). Suffice to say the ring I'm dreaming of, isn't in his budget range unless he sacrificed a lot, which seems unfair and not at all how our marriage would work.

That being said, here's my current budget:

  • Monthly Budgetable Income: $2,932
  • Rent: $1,166 (We live near DC, this is pretty cheap)
  • Food: $200
  • Electric: $100
  • Gas: $150
  • Cable/Internet: $80
  • Laundry: $40
  • Household Items: $40
  • Gym Membership: $20
  • Present Planning: $50 (birthdays, christmas, weddings, etc.)
  • Insurance Escrow: $115 (I shuttle this off my checking so I don't get blind sided when it comes due later)
  • Savings: Car: $450
  • Savings: Emergency Fund: $321 (currently at 2 months, still building up to 6)
  • Spending Money: $200 (clothes, dinners/drinks, misc. crap, etc.)

So aside from pulling overtime at my job when it's offered (I'm intending to do that, it's just that OT is infrequent and rare), changing my desire for a diamond (Not gonna happen, sorry guys, but I'm a little bit basic in this category): do you have any ideas on which categories to shave down (and ideas on how to do it), and other ways to save money, or save on the ring/diamond itself?
