I'm not sure who personally to discuss this with so I'm going with the reddit audience...

I'm 48. Divorced, sharing custody of two 7-yr-old boys. My credit score, as mentioned, is currently at 830. I have a mortgage on my home, a 2012 car i bought used (no payments), and a 2014 motorcycle i have payments on. I live within my means; i pay off my credit cards monthly in full. I make some sacrifices for myself so I can afford to make sure my boys have what they need and a little extra. Here's the...problem? Almost everyone I know is carrying credit card debt. No one seems outwardly any worse for it, though I know people can hide their issues. But some of them have taken summers off (as teachers) despite being in debt. Many of them go on vacation; one just took their teenager for a 7+ day trip to Venice, Paris, London, accumulating even more credit card debt. That person just came back and talked about how priceless the memories are (obviously) they made with their child, a once in a lifetime trip.

Am i doing this wrong? I feel like my desire to stay debt-free is preventing me from taking advantage of life. Is my tombstone going to read, "He had an 830 credit score!"? I'm not talking about going out and dropping $100K on a new car. But I sure could stand to get my kitchen updated. Getting a new item of clothing more than once a year would be nice.

For those of you carrying some debt, what am i missing? And those of you debt-free, what aren't I missing??

Looking forward to some practical debate. Thx, everyone.
