While I'm currently only getting into investing (using Robinhood and considering a Vanguard Roth IRA), I wanted some help from reddit regarding portfolio diversity. I've already decided to invest most money in a Vanguard Index Fund (VTI/VUS), but I also want to leave some aside for major companies such as Johnson & Johnson/Disney, which I have admiration for and believe in.
Would this be a smart idea? If so, what percentage should be invested? I understand individual stocks are more of a gamble, but I'm ok with a combination of very safe investments and some more risky ones with individual stocks.
TL;DR - How can I intelligently combine index funds and individual stocks in a portfolio, if at all?
