Hi all,
I'm a 20 year old college student who just recently applied for a part time job at my school doing something related to the field I want to get into. The job was advertised at $22 an hour with no benefits, and this was very appealing to me as I had worked nothing but minimum wage jobs my whole life and was ready to start making some real money doing a job that would help build my resume.
I got an email today from my boss explaining that the university I go to has a rule about full time students who work for the university. The rule states that if your a full time student, you cannot work more then 20 hours a week and they cannot pay you more then minimum wage. She apologized and said that if I still wanted to the job, they would be cutting my pay to $11 an hour. This outraged me, as I feel I had been tricked. After going back and forth with my boss, the result was that her hands were tied and HR was unwilling to budge as it would set a precedent for other student workers.
Im not sure what to do now as the job has a lot of benefits for me (very close to where I live, hours are flexible, doing something related to my field) and I really need a job. But the whole pay thing makes me want to refuse it out of principal and just get a job at a grocery store since I would be getting paid the same either way.
EDIT: Since a lot of people are asking, I checked the HR website where they have a student wage chart that outlines what the different types of student jobs can pay. It is technically outdated since min wage just got raised in my state, but it seems to be in line with what my boss told me.
