For background, I'm a salaried employee who has been working with this company for 11 months now. I'm in a very technical junior role BUT I'm the only one in my position capable of doing my job where we are located (the project manager doesn't have a technical background). I've yet to take any vacation as I've only now have built up vacation time and have a need to use it.
I have a trip coming up in a month and a half and want to take 2 days off (Thursday+Friday) paid as well as Saturday and Sunday unpaid (sometimes we work Saturdays). I tried to submit my time off request forms a month ago but my boss pushed back and said we will deal with it when it is closer. Yesterday, I submitted the paperwork to him. He has said he is refusing to approve my vacation time.
He is refusing because he MAY need me on site as we may be at a critical part of our schedule. On one hand, I understand him needing me as he needs my skill set and knowledge. HOWEVER, how can I ever take a vacation if this much is expected of me? If my role is THAT important, I should be paid more to deal with my job controlling so much of my life or they should hire another employee for my role.
Is it reasonable to quit over this? I haven't taken any time off since I started. This job has also been a bit crazy with hours (50 to 70 hours/week, Monday-Saturday) with instantaneous schedule changes that really affect my personal life. Not to mention being moved halfway across the country with 2 months notice. It pays well, but not quite enough that I would give up important events in my life for....
I'm only hesitant to quit as I've barely been with the company a year and the experience has been great for my resume. I'm just looking for advice and opinions. Thank you!
