I'm sure folks have thoughts about gambling addiction in general, but for the purposes of this post I'd like to focus the discussion on the basic question of "what tools are out there that would prohibit me from obtaining cash?"
Some quick details:
- While I have my ATM withdrawal limit for my debit card set pretty low ($40), the ATMs at the casino near me allow for "Cash Advances," which is basically a way to circumvent ATM withdrawal limits. You enter your PIN, punch in the amount you want to withdraw, and it prints out a slip that basically acts like a check that you sign and "cash" with the cashier.
- I bank with Wells Fargo.
- I have a support system in place that is willing to provide accountability and support. So something like a joint account that a trusted friend or family member can help monitor might be an option.
Unfortunately, my general life situation is very (in)conveniently set up in such a way that my home, workplace, and bank are all within 5 blocks of the casino. So what would be really ideal is a debit card that allows me to make purchases, but does not allow me to withdraw cash from an ATM in ANY way.
Thanks in advance for your insights.
