I'm currently a college student and is currently working at subway. (This is my first proper job)
Earlier today we had a customer who bought some subway gift cards using a credit card. I happen to be the cashier and just went with the transaction as usual.
Few hours later we were informed by a police officer that the guy who bought some gift cards earlier was a thief who stole a lady's purse earlier in the day. The police talked to our boss asking if he could see some security footage earlier when the thief happened to enter our store. (The Police also interviewed me about the appearance of the said thief)
Now, here's the problem. Afterwards I got a call from my boss.
First he wasn't happy about what happened, I was told that I was causing him a lot of work. Then I was told that I should have asked for the customer's I.D. when the transaction happened. (In my defense, for a few months that I have worked here, I have never seen any other employee asking for a customer's I.D. nor have I been told to).
Secondly, I was told by my boss that he's not paying for the amount the thief was able to use at our subway store, using the stolen credit card. (I assume he needs to refund the whole thing?) I was then told that I have to pay for it.
I know part of it was my mistake, I should have been more wary of the thief. I should have asked for his signature on the receipt too. I will probably get fired. (I'll at least ask if I could work till the next paycheck, that way I can pay for the damages caused.)
Legally, are employers even allowed to have their employees pay such damages?
Will this prevent me from applying to another subway? I was fine working there, it was a good way for me to earn money while at school. What do I tell in my applications how I left my previous job?
English is not my first language, I hope I wrote it clear. Thank you.
