My fiancé just reached pastoral status within the church giving her the ability to opt out of social security if she so desired. I understand that this means she won't have to pay into SS, but also won't get it later on either. What are all of the implications that go along with opting in or out and are there better things that she could do with the money that she would be putting towards SS if she decided to opt out that would yield greater returns or be better in the long run? I'm not sure how much info is needed in order to properly discuss this matter, but she is 25, makes $45k/year with no debt, and has a 401k through her employer. She and I both would like to fully understand this before making any decisions about what we need to do, so any insight is appreciated.

edit: since we are getting married soon, my info may be useful as well, not sure. I'm also 25, make $37k/year with no debt, and I also have a 401k through my employer.
