Hi all, like the title says, I’m seriously debating taking 9 months or so off from working to travel the world. I can’t tell if this is exciting or just a really dumb move financially.
About me: 30YO female who does not wants kids.
Expenses: - No rent currently because of a break up - crashing with my parents until I figure out where I want to move/what I want to do. - No utilities (because of said breakup.) - Car insurance - $98 a month - No CC debt or student loans
Pay: I work in tech, so I’m really lucky to make a good salary. $250,000 total comp. BUT the tech market is pretty shit at the moment and there’s been a lot of layoffs for my type of role in particular…so I kind of feel like it’s just a matter of time before I get laid off.
Net worth: $355,000 currently but if I work until the end of the year it’ll be $400,000.
Potential travel costs: I’ve estimated this to be around $35,000 - $40,000 for everything that I want to do/see.
My ask: Would it be dumb to leave my well paying tech job in January to travel the world? I’m like 99% sure I would NOT be able to just get a leave of absence so I would have to find another job if I chose to leave and travel which is stressful in a bad market.
Honest thoughts and opinions welcome!
Editing to add: I kind of feel like doing this is now or never because I don’t want to stay at my parents for that long so I either commit to travel or sign a lease somewhere for the next year or so.
