Hi all! I just got my first full time 'real' job offer and am about to move out for the first time — would love your input on my budget! I make 40k in the Tampa Bay area in Florida, which is $1300 biweekly after-tax paychecks ($2600 / month).
I'm 20 and I have about 25k in savings, 2-3k of which will probably be going towards moving, first and last month's rent, deposit, and a mattress (will thrift other furniture as i go, but all i really need now is a mattress). I left a $200 buffer in my budget just because i don't really see what else i would be paying, but i plan to add the remainder into savings each month on top of the $800.
Would love to know what you think, if you have any advice (esp since i've never really lived on my own before), or if I'm missing anything!!
Budget as follows:
Monthly cap: $2600
Expense | Cost | Explanation |
---|---|---|
Rent | 650 | 2 bedroom split w roommate |
Renter's Insurance | 15 | estimate — hoping to get this through my car insurance |
Utilities | 100 | water and electric — high end of local estimates |
Internet | 30 | estimate — split with roommate |
Cell Phone | 10 | current |
Car Insurance | 87 | current |
Car Maintenance | 40 | this is really just the occasional oil change and in case of emergency |
Gas | 40 | this is really budgeting a lot — i pay 40 a month now and i'm moving from an hour away from work to a 15 minute commute |
Groceries | 300 | would rather budget too much than not enough, esp because i'll be buying stuff like toilet paper and cleaning products. that being said, last time i was doing my own grocery shopping i spent $80 the entire month |
Eating out | 100 | eat out twice a month at most but i'd rather budget more than not have enough |
Clothing / Thrifting / Shopping | 200 | hobbies basically |
Events | 50 | club cover |
Savings | 800 | |
Total | $2422 |
