I’ve cracked the code to making okay coffee taste as good as the fancy stuff! I’m a French press snob and up until a couple of months ago, I was paying $20 (if not more!) a month for expensive coffee from a local roaster. I recently made the switch to Costco’s Jose’s and found the following to be tremendously helpful: 1. Figure out the correct ratio of grounds to water. This varies depending upon the coffee you’re using. After some trial and error, I settled upon the perfect weight per liter of water. I have a food scale but now use a plastic cup with lines indicating where to fill to. 2. Use. Filtered. Water! I cannot stress this enough. I live in an area that is notorious for hard water. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference but it really, really does. 3. Descale and clean your coffee stuff on a weekly basis. I use an electric kettle so once a week I’ll throw some vinegar in there and boil the max amount of water it can hold. I also wash the entire French press with a very, very dilute soap solution. Like, the tiniest fleck of soap you can imagine in a lot of water. I find that it removes buildup of stale coffee taste.

Overall, I’m very happy with this easy switch. A good cup or two of coffee in the morning has always brought me so much joy and I’m glad to continue enjoying it every morning and not feel like I’m missing out on something. My wallet’s happier too. At my previous rate, I would have ended up spending at least $240 a year. By purchasing Costco coffee in bulk, I’ve brought that down to ~$100.
