I took a job during the pandemic as I had been laid off for 3 months and wasn’t sure what jobs I’d be able to get. I have 10+ years in the marketing and graphic design field and took a job paying 35k a year as a marketing coordinator in chicago. I knew this was low (my last salary before layoff was 65k) but I had no choice as unemployment was running out and the other offers I had were only part time and for even less. The drive to work alone costs me about $250 a month.
I’ve been in this position for almost a year now and have been consistently looking for jobs, but the market is so over saturated. I’ve been doing everything- sharpening my skills, taking online classes in marketing and design... all of my offers are 30-35k or part time, or outside of my field.
I recently asked for a raise to 50k and was only given a $1000/year raise. Laughable amount. I was told that in order to receive a raise I would have to write up a plan and schedule to work overtime and take on more duties in addition to my own.... so not a raise, a promotion. And the highest they’ll go is 39k. I’m about ready to leave and start my own marketing firm, but i’m nervous because obviously that means lack of job security. I make around $3000/month with part time freelance work. If i were to go full time i’d be able to double that , at least. I’m just extremely frustrated that there are companies that can get away with this gross underpayment.
