My SO and I live in Nyc, and this pandemic has had us daydreaming about the freedom of car ownership, especially in nicer weather. SO's parents are in the market for a new car and very generously offered to gift us their current, very low mileage 2015 honda accord. While this feels like the answer to our daydreams, we're trying to wrap our heads around the cost of this very generous gift.

For those familiar with the nightmare that is nyc parking: we live in a neighborhood of NyC that has decently accessible street parking. We will likely get frustrated with alternate street parking after doing it for a prolonged period of time, but it is possible. Granted, we say this now while we work remotely and can manage alternate street parking during business hours.

We have lived in cities most of our adult life and have not needed a car, so we are unfamiliar with budgeting for one. Does anyone have a sense for how much insurance might be for a year? How much to budget for maintenance (the car has only 40k miles)? Ancillary costs we might not be thinking about?

As the saying goes, we don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth. But we want to think about this seriously, and could use input from folks who have gone down this path. Thanks for the feedback!
