I’m early on in my sales career where I’m now actually closing deals. I’m struggling to make a budget because of the unknown income I will have. Typically in tech sales you have a 50/50 split (salary/commissions) in your earnings.

So say I have 60k in base salary and 60k in on-target commissions. The base salary paychecks are fine but I can barely live off it, especially if I have trip or random expenses come up. When I close a deal it’s 3-5k in commission so I’m supposed to close about 10-13 deals in a year.

However, what I’m struggling with is one month you might close a deal or two and then the next you MIGHT but it could also fall through - could happen two months in a row. So the question is, is how do you budget when not only are your expenses kinda up and down, but your income could widely vary?

Appreciate the advice ladies and gents
