Given the average wedding costs $40k and the average funeral $10k, all for something that lasts 1-3 days. It seems ridiculous that people spend almost an entire person's yearly salary on a wedding, which has a good chance of ending in divorce a few years later (which also costs in the thousands again). I honestly dont understand how a wedding can even cost this much. Like you could rent a really nice beach house for under $500/day, get catering at a cost of $15/guest, print your invitations from your home printer, have friends take photos with their iphones (or if one of them has a fanc y dslr) and maybe rent a few bose speakers and play music from a spotify playlist
Funerals are even more ridiculous. I feel like there is no need to spend nearly 5 figures to remember someone. It can be done with a simple memorial/gathering of friends. For this reason, I refuse to contribute to any gofundmes asking for funeral expenses because I'm not helping the family, but greedy funeral homes. It shocks me that families who don't even have $1000 for an emergency expense ask for 10 times that amount to waste on a one day funeral, whereas they could use that money to drastically change their personal finance situation.
