I have a very, very small amount of money invested in a floundering company (AMC). And I suddenly realized I don't understand what happens if the company declares bankruptcy.

If they go out of business entirely, I assume the shares are worth nothing or maybe they just cease to exist? But what happens if a company goes bankrupt in order to restructure, like sometimes happens? Or what happens to the shares if the business gets bought out\absorbed by another company?

I'm not worried or anything; just curious.
