In my area, renting a modem from an ISP costs 15 dollars per month. A comparable modem costs about 70 dollars, and will last years. 15 dollars per month comes out to 180 dollars per year. If that were put into investments with a 6% annual return rate, after 40 years, that would turn in a little over 28k before taxes.

The greater lesson here is that sometimes, shelling out a little more money can prevent rolling costs, e.i. buying nice shoes that will last far longer than cheaper shoes, buying shelf stable ingredients like rice or pasta in bulk, etc.
