So, I'll try to keep this introduction short. I (35/M) grew up the child of Baby Boomers who were obsessed with stuff & possessions because they showed stability and success. After living most of my life with these ideals, I no longer believe in them. I've spent the last two years shrinking down and minimizing and simplifying where I can.

However, my big hangup is books. I've been an avid reader my entire life, was an English major in university, and work in a field related to writing and creativity. This means I own A LOT of books. By my estimate, the collection is close to 1,000. There are books on the main bookcase in my home office, books on the secondary bookcase in our home's foyer, books I keep at work to read when I have a down minute, and multiple totes of books at my parents's home. I want to get rid of these and downsize them, but I have this fear of letting go.

Some of the books are ones I purchased 5+ years ago with the intention to read, but never got around to them. Others are "classics" I purchased as a student and feel like owning them shows how serious I am about literature and pleasure reading. Some are just impulse buys from various thrift stores and rummage sales.

Ideally, I would like to pare down to enough books to fill the main shelf - a custom handmade unit which was a wedding gift from my in-laws - and the second shelf in the foyer I would share both of these with my wife for her novels and cookbooks.

But I feel like I'm sinking in all this paper and have no idea where to start. Thoughts?
