I told my company that I may be moving this year, but I won't have any information until we know about my girlfriend's transfer status through her company (it's in the works, she already has a dialogue with the next location's manager, but things move slow in corporate America). I gave them [verbally] several months notice of this and told them I would follow up with a two weeks to a month's notice so I can help train whoever is taking over my position. They were receptive of this.

I did tell them (in writing) that our lease was up in April and that we had hoped to know by then, but we haven't gotten any concrete details from my girlfriend's company (last time she transferred it took 2 months). My company has also been notified of this.

My company is now asking me to give them a set date of resignation (written/email) or they will set a date for me on March 31. I have not yet replied to this request.

The issue is, I still don't have any information or I would happily provide this to my manager. However I cannot be without a job while we are waiting to move. I do have a savings nest egg, but I was hoping hold on to that as a "just in case" while I look for a job in our next city.

Best case scenario I get the information in the next week and provide this to many company. Worse case scenario, I get let go prematurely and have to find a way to make ends meet prior to a move. I'm just looking for any and all advice on how to proceed.

Key Information:

As part of being hired, I did sign an "at will document" saying I could be quit or terminated for any reason. I plan on contacting the Department of Labor here in New Mexico next week to see what my rights/protections are.

My company does not have another location to transfer to.

We are moving because the crime has become intolerable and we didn't find the community and "success" we were hoping to here. Staying isn't really an option.

If you have any questions, or need anymore information please do not hesitate to ask.
