Long story short, I have a "joint" auto loan with my mother. She's very controlling and I've suffered years of toxic abuse at her hand.

I'm moving to England to marry my fiancé and finally cut all ties with her, once and for all.

She's, of course, fear-mongering me into continuing to pay payments on the loan when I leave. I understand it's in her AND my name, but I've already paid it off already once (has been refinanced due to the death of my father, car was in his name so mom wanted to "help me" by refinancing into both our names, AKA she wanted to control me more by having this to hold over my head. I've already paid over $25,000 in payments total).

I still owe $10,500 on the car, to which I pay $290/month. This is not helping me credit as it only shows on her CreditKarma account. It is NOT on my CreditKarma account and it is NOT on my credit report, which I just pulled today. I just want straight answers, because the only person I can ask is my mother and of course she's going to tell me I'm gonna ruin my credit and the world is gonna end!

My question is: if I stop paying payments when I leave will this affect my credit in any way? It does show on her CreditKarma account and it does say "joint", however, it shows nowhere on my CreditKarma account OR my credit report. I don't want this debt to affect me negatively when I move abroad, is why I'm asking.

What are my options if it WILL negatively affect me? Can I get a pay-off and sell the car? Can I let someone take over payments if they want to buy it? Can I tell the bank I'm immigrating and I won't have the asset anymore, but my mother will be sole owner? Can I remove my name from the loan without her approval?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!
