Background:I just graduated with a Computer Science degree. My first job is for a small web development company, making $47,000/year.

I told my supervisor today that I was ahead on my hours and asked if I could leave early. He told me that was fine, but if I keep working exactly 40 hours/ week and then going home, that it will be hard to convince the bosses to give me a raise. He told me that if they see me working more than 40 hours then they will be more inclined to give me pay increases.

However, I am NOT paid for hours beyond 40, since I'm on salary.

So they're basically asking me to do free work, just to earn a pay bump. Is this normal behavior in the adult world? Is that usually how raises are handed out? I don't know how to feel: on one hand it does make sense that I get a raise if I put in extra effort. But on the other hand, my free time is valuable to me, and it seems weird to be doing work I'm not getting paid for, even if it might mean a raise later on.

I have a coworker who started out at 40k and in 2 years has been bumped up to 60k, for which he cites having worked more than the standard 40 hours. So it seems like the raises are real, but I'm still uncertain if this is an ethical practice.

I don't know what additional information would be useful, so feel free to ask away and I'll add that info to the description. Thank you!

EDIT: Thank you for all the responses. Neither of my parents have ever held a steady job, and I don't have any older role models to compare to, so I really didn't know what to expect when entering the full-time world. Thank you for the clarification.
