I just saw a post on AITA about a guy who clean the house for his wife as a gift to scathing reviews. His post and information aside, if you truly have no money (this is not a “get outta buying a present” trick) then here is a way to please your family member. Note: I’ve exchanged these with my brother, mother and girlfriends.
It is inappropriate to offer something you should already be doing as a gift to someone, but if it’s not your job to do something, or it’s a task that is regularly traded back and forth such as, week to week, then this is great.
We called them “coupons” though they were just IOUs.
Lets say you’re behind on bills and there’s a gift holiday coming up. Write out on paper so it’s a physical gift “one oiled foot massage” or “one house cleaning” just know that it’s a commitment. If you give one and don’t fulfill the responsibility even once, they are only as valuable as your word.
With these, you’re not just doing something once for someone, you are offering them the option to have it done when THEY want it. Long week? Redeem a house cleaning, no questions asked. Long day? Foot rub. You get the picture.
I recently gave my buddy and his wife 3 “I’ll pay for a baby sitter so y’all can have a date night” coupons. Granted, this one costs money, but it was just another use for the idea. I don’t currently have anyone that would exchange these with me and I miss them.
Just thought this might be either a “useful when we are broke” idea, or a “these would be a cheap addition to the gift I already have planned.”
