Most of the towels I have in my house I got as hand-me-downs from relatives and friends and I have had them for about as long as I've lived on my own. Every towel was once a pretty high quality towel but they have several years of use from me and my partner and I'm sure several years of use before us. They're cleaned regularly and don't have any tears or holes, but they just aren't soft anymore.

I'd prefer to spruce up the towels we have and can't really go out and buy new ones. Do you have any tips or tricks to soften up old towels? We make our detergent from borax and a few other additives due to extreme skin sensitivity and have yet to find a fabric softener that we can use regularly but I am open to suggestions!
