I started a new job in June of 2018, and our office space was in a temporary office space on the outskirts of Indianapolis, IN, USA. I was told we’d be moving downtown eventually. That date is approaching soon, and I just learned we will have to pay for parking - an additional expense of around $1000-$1600 per year.

It’s not a ton, and I can afford it. Still, I’d rather not pay the extra expense if I can avoid it. Nobody ever told me definitively that we would or would not have to pay for parking, but our director seemed to imply there’d be some consideration for this added expense. Now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The temporary office was attached to a garage that had paid monthly parking, and we were provided parking passes without having to pay anything, but I’m not sure how much those cost or if they were included in our office.

My wife said to me that this is an effective reduction in salary of $1000+.

So here’s the question: Should I go to my employer and ask for a raise to compensate for this, and if so, how should I argue that?

I’ve never negotiated a raise at all, and the thought makes me uncomfortable. I’m also not okay with using bad arguments like “Well, I shouldn’t HAVE to pay for parking!” or whatever.

EDIT: I forgot to mention a couple things.

  1. It’s a fairly large company with tens of thousands of employees in the US. They don’t reimburse parking in any of their offices.

  2. They do offer/facilitate Qualified Travel Expenses where you can pay into a pretax account for the purposes of paying parking and other travel expenses.
