This may be better suited for a financial independence group. But I think there are several folks that will appreciate this.
This post is going to compare two excellent and durable cars, the Lincoln Town car and the Honda Civic.
So several years ago I was talking to my fleet mechanic and complaining about back pain after driving long distance. This begin my love of sedans, up until that point I only drove trucks ( I am not a huge fan of driving, so when I drive there is a good reason).
My mechanic recommend a large full size car, rather than a small compact car. I was surprised but am glad I took his advice.
So I have several sedans now ( I have several small businesses) and I have two large sedans and two small sedans.
I am going to compare the Lincoln Town Car and the Honda Civic. Two vastly different cars, both of these cars are very reliable and excellent cars in their own way, and for the sake of arguing we will say both cost appropriately the same amount to maintain (according to my fleet managers it is pretty close). I would consider both if these cars 300,000 mile cars if maintained to fleet standards.
The following numbers are what I paid in 2006 for the new cars.
Lincoln Town Car. 42,000$ Honda Civic 4 door sedan 15,000
Town Car depreciated 3,000 dollars a year or 2.22$ per mile.
The Honda Civic depreciated 833$ per year or .13¢ per mile.
So the take away here is if you plan to buy new and sell after 4-8 years jump on the Honda.
If you plan to buy used you are getting way more bang for your buck for the Town Car.
Sure there are lots of other variables, such as which group of people keep the car in better shape, and gas milage, safety, comfort and such.
But I just thought these actual numbers are interesting food for though.
