When I bought my house in 2000, I splurged for a nice rechargeable DeWalt cordless drill/driver. It got lite duty, but always got the job done -- even if I had to charge it up first, since I'm not really an avid DIY-guy, and often the batteries would be dead when I needed it, but they always took enough juice quickly enough that it wasn't a HUGE problem.

Anyway, when the 2nd battery finally said "done", I figured an upgrade might be nice, and so I hinted for a replacement for my birthday a few years ago (2015). My brother got me a Porter-Cable, and it's been pretty useful... until now.

I do a lot of travel, so its duty cycle was such that I literally never had to charge it until yesterday, when I wanted to mount something in the garage. It was dead, so I unpacked the charger and dropped in the battery, and then unpacked the 2nd battery.

Which was also dead.

Which was when I noticed that the charger was giving me a fast-red blink on both batteries, indicating a no-longer-chargable battery.

I called PC, and was told "yeah, if those get all the way dead, you can't charge them."

They no longer sell these batteries. Did I want to trade-in and upgrade to a new Porter Cable drill? Uh, fuck that.

So, if you're keeping score at home:

DeWalt 15 years of use, including many recharge cycles.

Porter Cable Disposable garbage.
