Afternoon Guys - UK based friend here.
This sub caught my eye a few months ago and I thought I would share my savings of not owning a personal vehicle.
I'm aware that having a car is an absolute must for some people, especially carers and parents and that is unavoidable in the majority of cases.
For me and lots of other people, having a car is a luxury.
Due to a medication i was taking (Woo NHS) I was unable to learn to drive from the ages of 18-24. I have learned to drive though not passed my test and really I keep putting it off for no good reason. I am 26 and my current living condition is stable and i work a Permanent Job 6 km away from my house. I cycle all spring and summer and on rainy/cold days I just walk and it takes about 1hr10minutes each way. This is great exercise and really good for my piece of mind and gives me time to listen to Podcasts. Sometimes a friend or colleage will pick me up if they see me or drop me further along the road etc.
I make a train Journey to london once or twice a month that I would make even if I had a vehicle and I visit my parents three-four times a year at a rail cost of about £60-£70 a time.
I estimate running a car would cost ~£500-700 for insurance and tax + fuel is £1.40 a litre in this country at the moment.
I was just wondering If anybody else did something like this. Taking a look at the 'essentials' and realised that they really didnt need it.
