I am in the market to buy a new (to me) car to replace a catastrophic engine failure on an old car. I haven't bought a car in a long time, like 12 years, so I'm a little out of the game and how it works since then. I have been looking at some cars in the $15,000 price range and I ask for the maintenance records and they give me a Car Fax or something similar and if the maintenance was not reported, then it just has when the vehicle was registered and title exchanges, etc. The sales rep basically doesn't want to help me and just let me walk away after asking for the records. Is this a new thing? I remember way back when I could ask for maintenance records and they would give me scans or a print out of receipts. I'm starting to think that if a dealer doesn't have maintenance records for all their used cars, then even cars that were never properly maintained, are just as good as ones that are. Is this actually happening?
