-10 mos. ago got 4 and 5 y/o gkids to raise, probably forever (addiction). -Just moved from impeccable 3br 3ba townhome with NO outside play space to an 800 sq ft 3 br 1 ba fixer upper house with a HUGE fenced yard and a glorious old maple tree. -I was already minimizing, realizing these kids need calm and peace and order more than they need STUFF. -I moved in with plans to expand the living room, open up the attic to have a high ceiling, totally re-do the kitchen. -But now I think I can make it work by only enclosing a crappy side porch and making it a small laundry/mud room.
Not adding sq. ft. and downsizing means maybe being able to save for braces and things I didn't budget for in my retirement.
All of a sudden, I'm loving the house that isn't perfect. I remember going into homes when I was a public health nurse and feeling awe at women's (not being sexist, but our current welfare system incentivizes the men right out of the house) ability to create warm, peaceful, welcoming homes with almost no money. Those patients I helped are now helping me realize all the kids need is what those women showed me is possible. They are my inspiration.
I'll post again later with before and after pics, but this sub is a daily go-to for me to remind me of what really matters. My thanks for that!
