Hey reddit, I'm trying to install a couple of porch fans in my home, built this year. The contractor told me that the fixture box was rated for fans but I think it's only rated for 15lbs, so I took it out and the way it was installed looked sketchy. Granted, I don't know a ton about this, but it looks like a pretty deep notch in the joist and not a super stable reinforcement job. Any input or advice?Also, assuming it is okay, the box they used is the less common 3.5 inch, and I'm having a difficult time time finding a 3.5 fan box, also have no idea what would be proper installation for a fan if it's already right up against the joist. Hopefully that makes sense, I've done a few fans in my day but this is a new situation to me, and given that the joist is all whack already I was hoping to not have to drill it out any larger for a 4" box.https://ift.tt/2tx9xmT in advance!
