Hi guys, so I'm moving into an unfurnished place starting on Aug 1st and would need to get furniture for it but would like to save money. A family friend has a bunch of really nice furniture that they're giving away for free including bed, shelves, couch, dining table, and drawers etc., but is located like 2 hours away. Problem is, they need the stuff gone by July 31st and my landlord won't let me move stuff in 1 day early unless I pay extra rent ($80). Movers could move everything ('24 truck required) for $900 or I could get a Uhaul and hire additional movers for like $600-$700. But it might just be cheaper and less hassle to buy second hand stuff on craigslist in town when I move in.
However, after taking a look on craigslist and second hand furniture stores, it seems that beds are actually pretty damn expensive like at least $250... Would it make sense to get a uhaul (costs $129 for '10 truck) in order to take just the free queen sized bed (and whatever else like end tables etc that could fit in the truck), crash at a cheap airbnb in town ($20), then move in on Aug 1st? Or is there some way to get a decent bed+mattress for under $200?
This is my first time moving to a rented unfurnished place on my own as my college was primarily residential (stayed in dorms all 4 years), so this is all new for me, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Tl;dr moving to unfurnished place, family friend 2hr away has free furniture to give away, worth it to spend ~$160 on uhaul to move just the bed? Or is it possible to get a bed+mattress for under $200?
