I like nice things but I've never had a particularly large budget for affording them. What's a fashionable frugal guy to do? In this case, there are 3 stores that I shop at. I thought I'd share in case you didn't know.
Ross, Marshalls, and Burlington Coat Factory.
These three places are great places to get expensive things for much less. Marshalls is a good catch all for deals but the standouts are Ross for home goods and Burlington Coat Factory for clothing. They buy the leftovers of department stores and other places and sell them much less. If you are willing to do some light digging and make a few visits then you can enjoy 1000 count sheets, blankets, furnishings, and expensive kitchen ware all by shopping at Ross. If you want designer clothes and fragrances without the expensive prices, Burlington is for you. There are some brands that don't allow this sort of reselling but if you're willing to be open minded and do some searching, you can nab great deals. I've not paid full price for luggage in my life. When I need new luggage I head over to Ross. When I need clothes or accessories (and shoes!) I check Burlington (and Ross sometimes). Ross does have lots of clothes but Burlington has a greater size range. If you're normal sized (I'm a big guy) then both stores can be good. Burlington's tend to be larger and have more stuff (and are far better for shoes I find).
The nice thing about these stores if that they still arrange things and stock things, so it's not totally bargain basement (which is really nice). If you're on a mission for something specific, it might take a few visits, but there's a strategy.
1) Avoid weekends (it's way too crowded and picked over)
2) Go during the week, preferably on Thursdays (the trucks tend to come in Wednesday nights)
3) Be open minded on color and textures
4) Be willing to check each week if you're looking for something specific
I hope this helps people who are like me and want nice stuff but can't really afford it. If you're willing to dig through the department store cast offs, which are still good, then you too can live like you shop Macy's at Walmart prices.
