I had a bad wreck on a bicycle last September that required ER and a later surgery. With a $7,500 deductible I was out of a lot of money quickly. I had medical bills from 4 different places, and I had to empty my emergency savings and stocks to pay the first 3 bills. Then, I got my last bill for $3500 and figured I would finance, but the hospital charged 10% APR for financing. I refused that option. They told me I could possibly get financial aid if I applied, but most of the time you need to be near the poverty line to receive anything. I decided to go ahead and shoot the moon anyway and did it, only to find the amount of paperwork and information takes nearly a month to prepare. I applied, and at the same time applied for a new credit line for the amount knowing it wouldn’t come through. Now, After waiting on “review” for nearly 6 months while my account is on hold I received a letter stating the total amount has been erased, PLUS the total amount owed for my child’s speech therapy that we’ve been paying. I’m nowhere near the poverty line, and although the wreck has financially put our family through a mess this year, on paper it looks like we have no problems at all. Hope this helps someone on the future!
TLDR: owed $3500 to hospital. Applied for aid although I didn’t meet usual requirements. Got the debt erased plus some.
