Friends of mine are having Insurance problems. If anyone has any advice it’s much appreciated.
Long story short: My friend (John) and his wife (Jane) had a child on August 10, 2016. Jane was covered by Johns insurance. This is in Illinois USA.
Last week they received a bill in the mail for $5k because they were retroactively denied Jane’s insurance through an audit 1.5 years later. After several phone calls, they found out that the birth of their child was considered a “life changing event”, so when John added their new child to their insurance, Johns company then dropped Jane saying that “because Jane work full time for a different company that offers health care they would not cover her”. They dropped Jane effective 12:01am on 8/10/16 the day she gave birth.
They are saying now so now Jane is responsible for her portion of the Dr. bill for giving birth at the hospital because she was considered uninsured. Jane was only covered by her works’ insurance effective when she returned from maternity leave. She even has a letter saying she was “approved for delivery” 8/9-8/12 even though now they are denying her.
Is there anything they can do? the insurance company is Blue Cross Blue Shield.
