I filled out a job application a few weeks ago and I without thinking much about it, I put $17-$20 on desired salary. I currently earn $16.35 at my current job. During the interview I found out the job is actually a salary based job and the shifts are 6pm-6am, Wednesday to Saturday with every other Saturday off.
My commute is increasing from 8 miles each way to 33 miles each way, so I will be spending more on gas and transportation. This is going to be my first job in IT and I need the experience but I can't afford to take what might be a pay cut.
Earlier today I received a call from HR and they said that the manager that interviewed me is interested in bringing me on and she went through my application and asked again if $17-20 is my desired salary and without thinking I said yes.... Ughh. I never negotiated a salary before. Is there any way to get out of this with more money? HR told me they'll call me back on Monday with an offer but I am afraid they will lowball me.
Any advice on how I could ask for more money? I think I did well on the interview and the manager seemed to like me, but it seems HR is making the salary offer.
