My identity was stolen today through theft of my actual phone number. The thief stole my phone number by providing some identifying information to Verizon, which caused my T-Mobile account to be cancelled without my consent and the phone number was port-forwarded to Verizon. They opened an account with that phone number to then bypass two-step authentication of my credit cards. Luckily this brought up a ton of red flags and I don't think any financial damages were caused. However, if you do not have an additional PIN to restrict changes to your phone account, I would highly recommend implementing one as it may protect you and your phone number.
