My mother is addicted to donating money to democratic political causes, mostly through the Act Blue donation engine. If you have ever been on a site like Daily Kos, you know what i am talking about. She's on a fixed income and cannot afford or sustain this: $6,000 in small donations (recurring thank you very much) since August. Nor does she, I think, realize how her donations off $11, 18$, $40 add up. We talk to her and its like talking to a gambling addict. She will say something like "Oh, I did not realize it was that much" and stop for a week or so, and then it continues on.
A few years ago she go taken for 100K by internet fraudsters -- since then we have taken some steps to protect her-- closed her HELOC, made me the Trustee of her estate, and my brother and I monitor her bank account. But she's retained her credit cards and this is the source of the problem.
So I guess I have a few questions -- are there legal steps I can take to block act blue from accepting donations from her? I feel this borders on elder abuse, although of course Act Blue does not know her particular situation. Is there a means for me to contact Act Blue and explain the situation to them? I am also curious if anyone from has ever researched this type of "addiction" and how these donation sites are engineered to promote a sort of dopamine feedback loop? Its quite frustrating....
I wonder about other ways of gaining control of her credit cards and getting more direct control of her finances. What would i have legally, to become her guardian?
thanks for listening!
