I just broke my porcelain dutch oven, which I have been using daily (for the past four weeks) to make bread for myself. It was great. RIP.
Feel like I can't go without one now, so I'm trying to decide whether to splurge on a Le Crueset (holy shit they're expensive---$200-$500!), or settle on something I know is a few quality tiers down (a Lodge or a Caphalon), because it's cheaper. I don't know how to decide. Even though I've been using it every day, I haven't been using it that way for very long, and several hundred bucks for a dutch oven feels... exorbitant. That said, BIFL is BIFL, and presumably you're paying for life-long quality.
Curious as to how y'all make these decisions for yourself. Do you have a personal equation that helps you determine whether to splurge on a potential BIFL item?
